Historic Fort Steilacoom
Fort Steilacoom was opened in 1849 to establish an American military presence in Puget Sound and to protect settlers. Four of the original quarters remain today as a living history museum. The fully furnished quarters show how an officer and his family, as well as how bachelor officers lived in the 1860’s. Fort Steilacoom is on the grounds of Western State Hospital. (253) 582-5838
DuPont Historical Museum & Dynamite Train
Discover the history of Native Americans, Hudson Bay Company fur traders, missionaries and DuPont explosive workers through the Museum’s interpretive displays, photos, and artifacts. Located directly behind the museum, see the last intact dynamite train in the State of Washington. (253) 964-2399.
Ft. Lewis Military Museum
The museum collects, preserves and interprets material of historical significance to the installation and the military units which have served here. Showcases the role that the US Army played in the exploration, settlement, and defense of the Pacific Northwest. (253) 967-7206. An enhanced drivers license is required to enter the base.
McChord Air Museum
Inside the museum, you’ll find the history of McChord Field/Air Force Base, from its beginnings in 1938 to current missions. Visitors may wish to call (253) 982-2485 to confirm hours. An enhanced drivers license is required to enter the base.
