Lemonade Day

Lemonade Day Lakewood is…

A FREE, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth (grades 3-5) how to start, own, and operate their very own business using the model of a lemonade stand.  Through engaging, interactive curriculum, youth are trained in the fundamentals of business and financial management.   Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success.

The program was established in Houston, Texas in 2007 and has since expanded to more than 100 cities throughout North America, Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico with over a million children participating to date. This year, Lakewood will launch Lemonade Day on June 6, with a goal of 300 youth participating.

Children can participate in Lemonade Day by registering with local organizations and businesses or by registering on-line through the Lemonade Day Lakewood website.  All children who register will receive a free Lemonade Day backpack containing a youth entrepreneurial workbook and mentor guide.  The workbook contains 14 fun and engaging lessons including setting goals, creating a business plan, budgeting, site selection, making lemonade, advertising, permitting, banking ~ and the art of giving back.

Children from all socioeconomic backgrounds learn these important lessons, develop leadership skills, and learn social responsibility as they are encouraged to spend a little, save a little, and share a little of their earnings with a local charity of their choice.

Lemonade Day has been described by other cities as a thoroughly joyous, forward looking, positive event.  Communities rally together on Lemonade Day as the children set up their stands for business throughout the city.  Businesses host young entrepreneurs to set up outside their store fronts and parks are decorated with a heartwarming display of lemonade stands and children who are experiencing for the first time a new sense of pride and self-confidence.

Every child that participates must first have a parent/guardian complete a registration form with their consent to supervise their child and ensure all health and safety guidelines are followed.   One of the lessons in the entrepreneurial workbook educates youth on health and safety procedures and instructs them to comply with their city guidelines.

Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of this exciting entrepreneurial project?  Let’s teach our kids early that the sky is the limit, if you have a dream and a desire to succeed!
