Ever feel like your brain hit “Eject” while the rest of you is still chained to your desk? I’m hearing much about burnout — and it’s showing up everywhere from your team’s “slack” to your family’s meal and bedtime routine.
Burnout isn’t picky
It doesn’t care if you’re:
~ a coder buried in bug fixes
~ a front-liner who deals with etiquette offenders who never learned to say “please” or “thank you”
~ a manager juggling more people and projects than a circus ringmaster
~ the boss who finds out 15 minutes before opening that two key employees have called out sick (yeah, we see you…)
Here’s the truth: burnout isn’t just a personal hiccup—it’s a full-on team epidemic. Left unchecked, it morphs into ghosting colleagues (aka absenteeism), random workplace spats (“Who drank my Coke?” becomes the daily battle cry), and those “Oops, did I really just hit “reply all” with that snarky comment? Ugh.
So—how do we snuff out this slow-burning fire?
Catch the Smoldering Ashes
Watch for three smokestacks:
- Cynicism (“Yay…another meeting”—said no one ever)
- Chronic fatigue (when “I need a nap” becomes your status update)
- Dip in performance (when goals seem to be forever out of reach)
If these sound familiar, it’s time to hit the brakes.
Draw the Line—and Respect It
- Your calendar is not just decoration. Block “me-time” (no inbox peeking).
- Weekend silence? Embrace it. If your team wouldn’t call you at midnight, maybe skip the midnight task ping.
Embrace Micro-Reboots
- The 2-minute stretch: Lots of great YouTube videos that show you easy stretches to get the blood circulating.
- The zero-goal slot: Schedule 10 minutes of absolute nothingness (yes, it’s a real meeting on your calendar).
- On your break – Get up and move. Outside is preferable. A couple of blocks of walking mid-day can change your perspective.
Talk About the Elephant in the Zoom
- Host a “let’s-get-real” lunch (bonus points if you bring the food).
- Ask “How are you, really?”—and then, brace yourself for honesty.
Sprinkle in Some TLC
- Flex work: Hybrid days, compressed weeks, “take-a-Friday-off-and-don’t-feel-guilty” policies.
- Surprise them: Yes, it’s out of your way, but that extraordinary bakery, or ice cream shop needs you to stop in and buy special treats for your team. You don’t have to be the boss to help motivate the team.
- Resources, anyone?: Meditation apps, peer-support circles, or at least a list of the best therapists in town.
Leaders, Take the Leap
If you’re skipping your own vacation because “there’s too much to do,” your team is taking notes. Take that trip—post a goofy selfie—and show that downtime is non negotiable.
Keep Score (Kind Of)
- Track tardiness, turnover, and the occasional “reply all” disasters.
- Survey with flair: “On a scale from ‘I’ve still got it’ ~ to ‘Send help,’ ~ how are we doing?”
Burnout isn’t “your problem” or “their problem”— it’s ours. And while a snazzy hashtag (#UnplugAndReboot) is fun, real change comes from intentional tweaks, genuine check ins, and you got it ~ a dash of fun.
Because when we tackle burnout together, we end up with sharper minds, healthier teams, and maybe—even a smidge more joy in day to day life. Now…who’s up for a 10 minute “do-nothing” break?
