The Pierce County Library System (PCLS) is one of Washington’s largest public library systems, serving Pierce County residents since 1946. Today, it provides access to more than one million books, e-books, audiobooks, digital resources, technology services, educational programs, and community events through 19 library locations.
In Lakewood, library services are provided through Lakewood Pierce County Library, one of the system’s busiest branches. The original Lakewood library closed in 2022 due to significant building issues, and a new interim Lakewood library facility opened in September 2024 to continue serving the community while plans for a permanent replacement move forward.
The library offers:
- Books, magazines, movies, and digital collections
- Free Wi-Fi, computers, and technology access
- Children’s story times and early literacy programs
- Teen and adult educational workshops
- Job search and career resources
- Meeting and study spaces
- Online learning tools, e-books, and audiobooks
- Community events and civic engagement opportunities
PCLS is known for promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community connection. Its mission is to empower Pierce County residents through access to information, education, and inclusive spaces that support learning and personal growth.
