The Lakewood Police Department is a relatively young agency by police-department standards. It was established in 2004, shortly after Lakewood became an incorporated city, and has grown into one of the larger municipal police departments in Washington State, with more than 100 commissioned officers and specialized units including K-9, Marine, Traffic, Investigations, and Community Policing.
What makes the department notable?
Community-focused policing
The department places a strong emphasis on neighborhood engagement, crime prevention, and partnerships with residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations.
Specialized services
Beyond traditional law enforcement, the department provides animal control, traffic enforcement, community service officers, crime prevention programs, and support for victims of crime.
Local roots
When Lakewood incorporated in 1996, police services were initially contracted through the county. The city later created its own police department in 2004, giving Lakewood direct local control over public safety priorities.
Community engagement
Officers regularly participate in neighborhood meetings, youth programs, National Night Out events, business outreach, and other community activities designed to build trust and communication.
