Lakewood Historical Society & Museum

Lakewood Historical Society is involved with and actively preserving, protecting, and displaying Lakewood’s history through educational programs and museum exhibits.

See Lakewood’s story come alive
The museum traces the area’s history from prehistoric times to today through artifacts, photographs, maps, documents, and memorabilia. Exhibits include early homesteads, schools, businesses, post offices, and the people who helped shape the community.

Discover the Lakewood you never knew existed
Many people are surprised to learn that Lakewood was once a resort destination and playground for wealthy Tacoma families, with golf, boating, tennis, auto racing, and lakeside retreats. The museum highlights these fascinating chapters of local history.

The building itself has history
The museum is located in Lakewood’s historic Colonial Center, in a space connected to the beloved former Lakewood Theater and Terrace Restaurant. For longtime residents, the location alone brings back decades of memories.

It’s easy, affordable, and family-friendly
The museum is designed to be a quick but meaningful visit. Admission is by donation, exhibits rotate throughout the year, and it’s a great place to take children, visitors, or anyone interested in local heritage.

Why you should go
You’ll walk out with a deeper appreciation for why Lakewood looks the way it does today. You’ll learn about the lakes, neighborhoods, businesses, military connections, and community landmarks that have shaped the city for more than a century. It’s one of those places that makes you feel more connected to where you live.
