City of Lakewood – Economic Development Manager Becky Newton

Becky Newton, Economic Development Manager, City of Lakewood

As the Economic Development Manager for the City of Lakewood, Becky Newton plays a central role in guiding strategic growth and strengthening the local business environment. Her work focuses on fostering a resilient and inclusive economy while enhancing the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Through a proactive and collaborative approach, Becky leads initiatives that support business attraction, retention, and expansion. She works closely with local entrepreneurs, developers, regional partners, and community stakeholders to ensure Lakewood remains a competitive and welcoming place to do business. By providing wrap-around support services and connecting businesses with the resources they need, she helps create pathways for long-term success and sustainable growth.

Lakewood itself offers a unique environment for investment and opportunity. Rich in history, recreation, shopping, and diverse culinary experiences, the city continues to attract businesses seeking a strategic and vibrant location. Advantages of doing business in Lakewood include no local B&O tax, access to major transportation corridors and ports, and strong educational partnerships through two colleges and nearby universities. Supported by a well-connected South Sound network, Lakewood provides businesses with access to resources and relationships that strengthen economic success.

A key aspect of Becky’s work involves managing multiple projects throughout the city, with a focus on targeted redevelopment areas and collaboration across departments, regional agencies, and community partners. Current initiatives include development efforts within the Downtown Subarea, Lakewood Station District Subarea, Woodbrook Business Park, industrial districts, and emerging neighborhood and pocket business communities throughout the city.

Lakewood is also home to a thriving and diverse International District that reflects the community’s rich cultural character. The district offers sought-after goods, services, and exceptional dining experiences that contribute to the city’s unique identity and economic vitality.

Beyond traditional economic development, Becky’s work incorporates priorities such as public health and safety, infrastructure improvements, workforce development, and sustainable redevelopment. She actively helps build partnerships between the City, local organizations, and educational institutions while also strengthening relationships with military neighbors, including Joint Base Lewis-McChord, recognizing the important role military families and defense-related industries play in the local economy.

Her responsibilities include market research, strategic marketing, business counseling—from startup ventures to second-stage expansions—business recruitment, government contracting assistance, policy development, and implementing the City Council’s vision, strategic plan, and long-term goals.

Through thoughtful leadership and a strong commitment to community partnership, Becky continues helping shape Lakewood as a vibrant place where businesses can invest, residents can thrive, and opportunity continues to grow.
